Atwood C. Glidden Obituary (1929

Palermo, Maine - Atwood C. Glidden, 83, of Palermo, Maine, passed away after a long illness on Sunday, December 16, 2012. He was born in Palermo, Maine on Nov. 25, 1929, the son of Howard and Beatrice (Worthing) Glidden. He attended school in Palermo, Maine and was a graduate of Erskine Academy. He served in the United States Airforce at Fort Francis E. Warren in Wyoming as an auto equipment mechanic from 1948 to 1952. After the service he met and married his wife, Pauline Bailey Glidden, and moved to Hartford, Connecticut where he got a job with Pratt & Whitney. During his lifetime he worked for Martin Freemen in Augusta, Maine, Kenway Boats in Palermo, Maine and then got a job working for the State of Maine as a carpenter and mason where he worked until he retired. Atwood was a “jack of all trades” being very proficient at anything he set his mind to. He had many hobbies, a few of which were pottery, square dancing, going to yard sales and going out for meals at his favorite restaurant, the Caboose in Palermo, Maine. He also enjoyed spending many hours digging in the dirt, and is infamous in his home town of Palermo, Maine for his underground tunnel running from the house to the barn, which he dug by hand. Atwood was very proud of the fact that he had earned his 33 year chip from AA, and that he was able to help others working thru the AA program. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Beatrice Glidden; his brother Elberton Glidden; niece Kathleen Saban (Glidden); and brother-in- law, Kempton Tobey. He is survived by the mother of his children, Pauline Glidden (Bailey); his three daughters, Valerie Glidden King and husband Stephen, Beth Glidden Mason and husband James, Cindy Glidden Ferguson; his son, Scott Glidden and his wife Michelle; his sister, Roberta Tobey; and his brother, Sherwood Glidden and his wife Betty (Reed) Glidden. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Atwood’s celebration of life service will be held at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home – Gray Chapel, 207 Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, Maine, on December 23, 2012 at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Ed Hatch officiating. A private family graveside service will take place in the spring at Branch Mills Cemetery in Palermo, Maine. The family would like to thank Hospice care givers and the many people from the Maine Veteran’s Home who provided daily care for our dad.
