Dr. Richard Irving Hunt Jr. Obituary (1948

FAIRFIELD, ME- Dr. Richard Irving Hunt Jr. of Fairfield, Maine died peacefully on September 13, 2018, in Augusta, Maine at the age of 70. Richard is survived by his mother Betty (Fenlason) Hunt of Fairfield, ME; his brother David F. Hunt, and his wife Martha K. (Gordon) Hunt of Fairfield, ME; his nephew Joshua J. Hunt of Waterville, ME, his niece Samantha L. Maheu, and grand-niece Margaret K. Maheu of Searsmont, ME. Richard was born on March 11, 1948, in Waterville, Maine to Betty (Fenlason) Hunt and Richard I. Hunt Sr. He was a graduate of Lawrence High School, Colby College and The University of Maine at Orono, where he received his Ph.D. in Canadian/American Studies and was a Resident Advisor. He started his teaching career at the University campus in Bangor, ME. The vast amount of his teaching was spent in Burlington, VT at Trinity College where he was a tenured history professor, and lead a yearly trip to the Canadian Maritime Provinces (one of his favorite places). Trinity College closed in 2000 and Richard went on to finish his 40 plus year career in higher education at Champlain College, also in Burlington. Upon his retirement, Richard moved back to Fairfield, ME a town he loved so dearly and was once a moderator of town meetings. Richard had a deep faith in God, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Burlington, Vermont and the Fairfield Center United Methodist Church in Fairfield, ME. Upon retirement from teaching, Richard became a leader of Sunday services and bible study in the Fairfield Center Church. He served in leadership positions in both churches and officiated a few weddings over the years. Richard loved reading, had a passion for trains, and was a talented public speaker. He was a proud New Englander, a Red Sox fan, and wore his mud boots far beyond the time of mud season. He was a generous, empathic and an understanding man who loved his family unconditionally. Richard had a heart of gold, was a devoted teacher, loyal friend, loving family member, and will be missed by so many. A funeral is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 30th at the Fairfield Center United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. All are welcome, as we celebrate and remember Richard’s life. Evie Starbird will officiate the ceremony.
