Obituary

WINSLOW: Evelyn Mary Blaschke, (Ev) 81, of Winslow passed away on August 4, 2014, at Maine General Hospital in Augusta after a long illness. The daughter of Evelyn (Layer) and John C. Neumann, Evelyn was born on December 4, 1932, in Jamaica, New York. She graduated from Grand Gorge High School in the Catskills and from State University of New York, Delhi. While at college she met and fell in love with a fellow student, Frederick Blaschke, whom she married on May 15, 1954. They moved to Branford, Connecticut where they started their family of six children. In 1966 they moved to Maine to follow Fred’s career and built their home in Winslow. Evelyn, who had always worked part time in secretarial positions, became a medical transcriptionist at Thayer Hospital where she worked nights for 33 years. With her ever radiant smile, Evelyn raised her children with such attention and pride that many of their friends considered her to be a “second mom” - and she never missed a play, recital, or sporting event if one of them was in it. Her love of music permeated her household with everyone singing in harmony, playing instruments, and enjoying musical theater. Over the years she taught religious education at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church; enjoyed the company of many friends with Beta Sigma Phi; traveled all over Maine and to all the places she wanted to see including Hawaii, Germany and Switzerland; and lovingly devoted herself to caring for her husband until he died in 2013. They had been married for 59 ½ years. Always energetic, Evelyn most recently attended her eldest grand-daughter’s wedding in Germany, enjoyed Red Hat meetings, and was rehearsing for a Shakespearian play. Many people will miss her including her children and their spouses: Lyn and Joe Rowden of Fairfield; Mary and Gary Freeman of Palm City, Florida; Rick and Ruth Blaschke of Clinton; Laurie and Forrest Davis, of Sullivan; Gary and Teri Blaschke of Standish; and Mark and Mary Blaschke of Sidney; her grandchildren: Aaron Rowden, Emily and Josh Fournier, Christian Rowden, Cathy Freeman and Sasha Meier de Fonseca, Amanda Blaschke, Sage Blaschke, Dakota Blaschke, Annalise Blaschke, Mark and Brianne Blaschke, and Nicholas Blaschke, and step-grandchildren: Forrest Davis, Jeff Davis and Noah Davis, Adam and Kendra Osborne, Ariel Osborne, Billie Jo and John Moore, and Jeremy and Hali Hardy; as well as several step-great-grandchildren and the newest addition to the family, great-grandchild Cara Lynne Blaschke. She is survived by her sister Dee Mountford and her family in South Carolina, her sisters-in-law, Barbara Tomlins, Pat Blaschke, and Dolores Neumann, and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Friends and family may visit at Veilleux Funeral Home in Waterville on Friday, August 8, 6-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Silver Street, Waterville, at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 9, on followed by a reception at REM Forum, 93 Main Street, Waterville. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Catholic Charities, Maine, Catholic Charities Maine P.O.
