FAIRFIELD, MAINE--Karen Elizabeth Genness “Mammie”, 60, a long time resident of Fairfield, Maine, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 28, 2013, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Maine, surrounded by her family. Karen was born on April 7, 1952 in Waterville, Maine, the second of nine children. She was the daughter of the late Merril Frederick and Ruth (Russell) Frederick. Karen grew up in Norridgewock, Maine, and attended schools in both Norridgewock and Skowhegan, Maine. Karen was a homemaker and worked several odd jobs throughout her life. Most of those jobs were things that she was able to do in her home which allowed her to stay home and care for her children. She was hard working, self reliant, determined, and the most caring and giving women. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved and put her family above everything. She had a deep affection for children and animals. Karen loved to travel and went on several trips with her children and family. Whether it was a bus trip with her sister to visit her brother in Ohio, traveling to Florida with her children, or just a simple shopping trip to Freeport, Maine, Karen always made things more fun somehow. The thing she loved above all was spending time with her six grandchildren who she loved more than life itself. She leaves them with the most wonderful memories that they will cherish forever. She was predeceased by her father, Merril Frederick; and her niece, Shelby Frederick. She survived by her ex-husband, Elmer Genness of Fairfield, Maine; her children, Lori Frederick-Genness of Fairfield, Maine, Nicole Alley and her husband, Chad of Fairfield, Maine, Clay Genness and his wife, Sherrie of Belgrade, Maine; six grandchildren, Brandy Alley, Caitlin Koller, Cassidy Alley, Alyssa Genness, Kristin Morneau, and Morgan Genness; her siblings, Danny Russell and his wife, Sue of Ohio, Steve Frederick of Norridgewock, Maine, Elaine Wheeler and husband, Artie of Norridgewock, Maine, Mark Frederick and wife, Missy of Skowhegan, Maine, Rick Frederick and partner, Paula of Mercer, Maine, Keith Frederick and wife, Tammy of Skowhegan, Maine, Anthony Frederick of Farmington, Maine, and Eric Frederick of Starks, Maine; and her mother, Ruth Frederick of Norridgewock, Maine. She also had a special bond with her sister-in-law, Ann Jenness of Skowhegan, Maine; and friends, Krissy Shifflett her husband, CW and their daughter, Danielle of Fairfield, Maine; many special nieces and nephews that she loved and thought of as her own; aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Karen touched the lives of so many and will be sadly missed by all who were lucky enough to have had her in their lives. The family would like to give a special thanks to the entire medical staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Maine for their exceptional care and kind words during our most difficult time. Visiting hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. with a funeral service to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 2 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, Maine. A celebration of Karen’s life will follow at Steelworkers Union, 577 Benton Ave., Winslow, Maine. A spring graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery, Fairfield, Maine.
