November 6, 2013 Kenneth R. Libby Oakland: Kenneth R. Libby passed away on November 5, 2013 with his family by his side. Kenneth was born on March 10, 1937 in Farmington, Maine the youngest son of 11 children of Bert and Bertice Libby. He grew up in Farmington and attended schools there. He is a graduate of Farmington High School in the class of 1956. Kenneth joined the U. S. Navy in the Seabee Division in September of 1956. He served in Pensacola, FL for a year as a surveyor. He then joined his battalion, MCB 4, and served in North Africa, Puerto Rico and Cuba for the remainder of his four year hitch. While in Cuba he received a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in September of 1960. In 1961 he met the former Sarah Wingate of Sebec, Maine who was then a student at Farmington State Teachers College. They were married on June 22, 1963 in Sebec, Maine. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in June of this year. They moved to Oakland, Maine where Sarah was a teacher and Ken worked as a foreman in the Waterville Window Company storefront division. On May 30, 1965 their daughter, Brenda, was born. In 1974 he founded Libby Glass & Mirror Company which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1999. In 1965 Ken joined the Masonic fraternity and worked through the chairs to become Master of Messalonskee Lodge in 1971. He was Most Wise Master of the Scottish Rite Valley of Augusta and was Degree Team Director for the 17th and 18th degrees for many years. Ken also worked in the 9th and 10th degrees for several years. He was Worshipful Master in the 32nd degree (Maine Consistory) for 20 years in Bangor. Ken is also a 40 year member of Oakland Chapter of OES #191. He served as Treasurer of Messalonskee Lodge for 14 years, Treasurer of Drummond Chapter #27 for 12 years, M.E. High Priest of Drummond Chapter for 4 years and has been President of the Oakland Masonic Association for the past 26 years. Ken is also a member of Mt. Lebanon Council of Oakland. Of all the Masonic bodies that he belongs to he has enjoyed Royal Arch Chapter the most. In 1998 he accepted an appointment as Grand Captain of the Host and then spent 3 years as a District Deputy Grand High Priest. From there he proceeded in the line to become Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Maine in 2006-2007. a position that he proudly accepted. Ken also served on the advisory board of the Waterville Assembly of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls for 5 years. While doing this he received the Grand Cross of Color. He is also a member of the General Chapter Royal Arch, International and was inducted into the Rosicrucian Society. Ken is a member of the Oakland Baptist Church of Oakland and served for many years on the Board of Trustees. He also was involved in the Youth Program for several years. He had fun playing Santa Claus for a few years for the Oakland Businessmen s Association. He was a corporate member of the Board of Trustees of Waterville Osteopathic Hospital, now known as Inland Hospital, for 10+ years. He also enjoyed helping to organize the Fourth of July Parades in Belgrade. Ken headed up the first Project Graduation for Messalonskee High School class of 1983. It is still holding on strong today. One of the things that Ken enjoyed most in life was sitting on the porch of Brenda s and Jules s camp in Caratunk, Maine overlooking the peaceful Pleasant Pond a place very near and dear to his heart. He also enjoyed building things and working around his home in Oakland. Survivors include his wife, Sarah, of Oakland, their daughter, Brenda Libby Gamache and husband Arthur Jules Gamache, M.D. and three wonderful grandsons Dalton Jules Gamache, Keenan Mathieu Gamache, and Bryce Dillard Gamache of York, Maine. Ken also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be 1:00 PM on Wednesday November 13 at the Oakland United Baptist Church 47 Church Street Oakland. A gathering of friends and family will follow at the Messalonskee Masonic Lodge on Oak Street. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Oakland.
