MADELINE BUTLER AUDET

Waterville - Madeline Butler Audet, 95, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Inland Hospital Waterville. She was born in Waterville on Sept. 29, 1921, oldest daughter of David Butler and Alice Tremblay. She grew up in the Depression and worked in Woolworth's store after school, graduating from Waterville High in 1941.

On July 14, 1941 she married Robert Audet. She was always proud of being in the Greatest Generation where sacrifices at home kept the families together while men went to serve, Bob being drafted and leaving her home with a baby daughter. He was listed MIA and a German POW. After he was liberated, came home and discharged from the Army, he resumed working back at the paper mill and together they raised two daughters. They were always very patriotic.

In the mid-1950s, she went to work for 10 years at Scott, always working opposite shifts so someone would be home with the girls. After Bob retired, they had a few years enjoying traveling, until he died suddenly in 1992.

Meme (renamed by her grandchildren) was always busy sewing, especially Christmas crafts, and making many crazy quilts that her family prizes. Her "Magic Soup" is legendary. She spent countless hours and years, before the internet, researching genealogy with daughter Pat. She always was a big part of all the numerous family gatherings over the years. She was able to live at her home with Gloria's care until last December when she went to live at The Woodlands.

She is survived by her two daughters: Patricia Zimba and husband Bill and Gloria Audet; her grandchildren: Jeffrey Zimba, wife Angela and son Nicholas; Gregory Zimba, wife Wanda and children Jordan and Drake; Cheryl Anthony, husband Blaine and step-daughters Chauntelle, Courtney and son Wyatt; sisters-in-law Lucille Audet, Jean Audet, and several nieces and nephews including special niece Laurel Nabarowsky. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Robert, her sisters: Catherine Carver, Marie Rodrigue, Lorraine Stevens and her brother Thomas Butler.

We would like to thank the staff at Woodlands for their care, compassion and support while she was there. A special thanks to the staff at Inland, F-2, who worked diligently to keep her comfortable in her short stay.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday September 27, 2017 at 11:00 am at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 110 Silver Street, Waterville with a committal service at 1:00 pm at the (old) Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 289 Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
