Raymond St. Amand Obituary (1942 - 2015)

Fairfield, ME- A most generous and gentle soul passed away leaving his family and friends with heavy hearts. On Tuesday, March 31, Raymond St. Amand left this world unexpectedly with his family surrounding him with love. Ray was born in Waterville, Maine to Margaret (King) and Laval St. Amand on May 12, 1942. He lived in Fairfield, ME all his life, attending Immaculate Heart of Mary School for 8 years. He was one of the first people to attend Hill Top School for the mentally challenged. He loved being there while learning new crafts from Loretta Demkowitz, a new lifelong friend. He worked at Thayer Hospital in the maintenance department where he kept the elevators spotless. After leaving Hill Top School, he was employed by various places including Ken-A-Set in Waterville, ME, the new recycling center in Winslow, ME and Waterville, ME, and then in the store on Main Street. Ray loved life to the fullest, giving his time and energy any way he could. Much of his love was given to his special family at the Muskie Center Adult Day Care Program, especially Allison and Tammy, who he never failed to call and let them know how he was feeling, several times during the day, when he was not at the Center. He loved being taken shopping every Tuesday, by Giselle, to purchase something he really had to have. Giselle was a guiding light for him for the last several years and Ray’s family feels so fortunate to have had her in his life and theirs. Ray was also a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus, where he held various stations. Thanks to Jules Letourneau, he never missed a meeting when he felt well enough or a ride to attend church. Jules and his wife Gaile were so generous with their time and love. He considered Jules his brother and Gaile his other sister. He was predeceased by his parents; and his Grandmother, Charlotte King who took special care of him; and his brother-in-law Terry Lawe. He leaves behind sisters, Elizabeth and her husband Fred Jones of Orlando, Florida, sister Barbara Lawe of Fairfield, ME, and sister Susan Reid of Oakland, ME; special cousin, Patty Shea of Fairfield, ME; his nieces Ann Stahl of Germany, Beth Mills of Florida, Samantha Lawe of Scarborough, ME, and nephews Alan Bechard of Tennessee, Trista Lawe of Fairfield, ME, Brandon Maheu of Fairfield, MEand Jeremy Maheu of Waterville, ME. There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christin Burial will be celebrated at Notre Dame Church, Silver Street, Waterville, ME at 11:00 AM, Tuesday April 7, with a reception and celebration of his life in the church hall after.
