Oakland: Russell C. York, 92, passed in peace early Friday morning April 26, 2013 at Inland Hospital in Waterville after a brief stay. He was born in Waterville on November 18, 1920 the son of Clifford S. York and Glendena (Taylor) York. Russell grew up in Winslow before joining the US Navy during WW II. He was a Seaman 1st class aboard the U.S.S. Etterman in the South Pacific. He has been most proud of his military service to our country. He was employed over 40 years as a boiler operator by Scott Paper Company in Winslow, retiring in 1983. Russell moved to Oakland in 1950. He was an accomplished carpenter and built 2 homes and a camp. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and his coffee with friends at McDonalds through his later years. He was predeceased in 1988 by his wife of 38 years, Marie A. York; a brother Charles York, and 2 sisters, Beulah Wentworth and Charlotte York. Surviving is his daughter Cindea Rancourt and husband Mark of Oakland, a brother Robert York of Winslow, a sister Barbara Michaud of Vassalboro, 3 grandchildren, Braden W. Rancourt of Oakland, Alysan K. Rancourt of Oakland, and Catherine Deschaine of Tampa, Fl., 5 great grandchildren, a special nephew Charlie E. York who has spent time this past year with "Uncle Russell", and several other nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his special cat Buddy. There will be no visiting hours at Russell's request, and a grave side service will be held Monday, April 29, a 1:00pm at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Grove Street Waterville.
