June 1, 2013 Oakland: Walter J. Powell 69, died unexpectedly on Friday May 31, 2013 at the Maine General Medical Center in Waterville. He was born in Waterville on September 8, 1943 the son of Alan and Grace (Heath) Powell. Walter attended Oakland schools. He married Rosalie J. Quimby in 1961, they just celebrated their 52nd anniversary. Walter was formerly employed by Tukey s Sawmill, Asplundh Tree Services and drove truck for the Town of Oakland before becoming disabled in 1985. He loved to fish and hunt with his family and friends as well as playing guitar and singing music. Walter was predeceased by 2 sons, Scott A. Powell and Carl E. Powell, along with his father Alan Powell, 2 brothers, Robert Powell and Ted Powell. Surviving are his loving wife Rosalie J. Powell, 5 children Walter D. Powell and his wife Linda of Skowhegan, Brian L. Powell and his wife Sandra of Oakland, Sandra J. Hayden and her husband Patrick of Knox, Wanda L. Welman and her husband Gene of Oakland, and Anthony R. Powell and Kim of Norridgewock. 3 brothers Herman, William, and John Powell, 1 sister Nancy, 10 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Hospice Volunteers of Waterville for their support during Walter s Illness. Friends are invited to visit 12:00 - 2:00 PM on Monday June 3 at Wheeler Funeral Hom3 26 Church Street Oakland where a funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at the Lewis Cemetery in Oakland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the funeral home.
